Music at The First Religious Society

The Adult Choir is for people of high school age and up. We sing music spanning several centuries, and ranging in styles from the classical works of Mozart, Bach and Handel to contemporary works and spirituals. The Choir presents special music during the Christmas and Easter seasons. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 9:00 and on Sunday mornings at 9:15 for that day's service. The Choir sings almost every Sunday, but there is flexibility and understanding about those who have to be away at times because of other commitments.

KIDSKWIRE is open to elementary and middle school children, grade 3 or older. A special effort is made to choose music that not only engages children, but also teaches them about the musical principles and practices of singing in a group. In addition, they are given an opportunity from time to time to play their musical instruments, and those who are not instrumentalists provide the percussion section. Rehearsals are weekly except during school vacations.

The Handbell Ensemble is intergenerational and meets to rehearse for special occasions such as The Winter Holidays concert, Christmas Eve services, and the Easter season. Some music reading is helpful and good rhythm is a requirement for this group. Rehearsals TBA.

The Jazz Trio -- guitar, bass, and drum set -- plays at several services and special events throughout the year.

The First Religious Society sponsors many concerts -- classical, folk, and jazz -- and encourages recitals and performances. We provide one of the venues for the 3-concert series by Cambridge Society for Early Music. A yearly concert by the Arcturus Chamber Ensemble benefits the Children with AIDS Program at the Boston Medical Center. Additional concerts by Arcturus, the Rosetta Trio, and other ensembles are held here throughout the year. We also welcome the many music teachers from the Carlisle area who use our facilities for student recitals and concerts.

In addition to these groups, this church is also fortunate to count among its members and friends several professional musicians who perform at services and special events throughout the year. We also regularly invite guest instrumentalists and singers from the Greater Boston area to share their talents with us.
